The Battle of Disruption

The drive for status quo shakeup gets me out of bed each morning. It is what emboldened the start of Edoc Service 18 years ago. 23 Years in corporate America shaped my attitude of disfavor of the norms in business. Other than a few outside-the-box thinkers, the idea in 1997 of launching a 100 percent virtual business culture brought howls of laughter from family and friends.

Technology today evolves at Mach speed yet the policies and business governance is often way too slow to respond. Disruption flies in the face of status quo however, and if, like me, you are heading down that path expect the attack dogs attempting to block the way at every turn.

So, why do we do it? What does this army of forward-thinking entrepreneurs hope to accomplish? Here are a few of the lingering quo’s that keep us focused:

Quo 1 – HR leaders that choose to act as the world’s compliance officers inhibiting freedom and innovation in the workplace.

Quo 2 – Sales people that schmooze and leaders utilizing 70’s and 80’s tactics including a “sweat shop” culture with peer-to-peer competition making the title sales team an oxymoron.

Quo 3 – Accounting leaders limiting their roles to tax and financial legal compliance while small business owners engage in the economic fight for survival.

Quo 4 – Corporate expectation of pay for time on site from staff property rather than allowing creative individuals freedom to contribute and be compensated for results instead of time spent at the helm.

Quo 5 – Big government yearning to control too many aspects of the free market and of course, to place us disrupter innovators in check!

So, on the disrupter scale, where do you reside? I side with the visionaries in the fight to break down the “Quo” walls. We have a ways to go but are making progress. Capitalism has always brought “creative destruction”. I just want to speed it up some.
